Life has its way of bringing change, and over the year for many of us, change has been a constant companion. For me, this has been a year of deep inner work, changing course, seemingly, midstream, and on the surface, what feels like not much movement forward, despite reaching desired goals.

Some of you know that my husband and I separated in January, and through the year we have worked to “uncouple”, as they say, in the most loving way possible. This process has been intensely challenging, heartbreaking and freeing at the same time, and it has required of me, lots of retreat time to get through it. And by retreat, I mean aching surrender – hunkering down in a small cocoon of personal space, and digging deep to see what wants to come forward next.

I’ve come out into the sunlight a few times this year – to reach out to you through a newsletter, to travel to TN for Jewel School episodes or to teach a workshop in Santa Barbara – but for the most part, getting through the year to this place of unknowing what’s ahead, has taken most of my focus and energy.

Throughout the year, my work has been a place of solace, a deep and comforting reminder that creative expression can lift up and begin to heal even the most hopeless heart. I’ve come to realize, also, that this knowing is where my work is taking me. I’m not yet clear how it will all manifest, but I do know that creativity is a healing force for good in the world, and one that is sorely needed in our personal and collective lives these days. I am gaining a new understanding of my belief that Creativity is Love in Action, and I know that planting more seeds of Love – in our hearts, in our relationships, in our communities, and in our world, no matter our differences – would be a very good thing.

Below, you’ll find a request, a few reminders and, to keep with the theme of this newsletter, a change:

Happy Beading!,

Fall is in the air, and with it comes a feeling of wanting to slow down and come back to center after the outward energy of summer. I’m looking forward to cooler days, baking my morning scones, and embracing coziness and the feeling of home.

After going through a series of tests this summer to address some health concerns, I’ve received a clean bill of health and maintenance protocol. I am continuing with my self care, incorporating exercise, nutrition and vitamin therapy, spiritual connection and meditation as well as life and business coaching.

Learning to take time for myself and listen inward to what truly wants to emerge is taking lots of practice, ongoing awareness and courage. Unwinding the habit of being a “Doer” is hard for me – especially since I have so many ideas and like getting stuff done! I am learning to cultivate trust, and beginning to welcome a team to help me grow my business, so I can continue to hold and expand the dreams and vision of my work in the world. It’s exciting and a little scary!

By embracing courage and heart-felt focus, one of my dreams is becoming a reality! It has been my wish to open an online school for Jewelry Arts, and on October 4th, I will launch the first online class in the Jewelry Arts Academy! Though the course opens on October 4th, the online class format allows you to enroll in and begin the course at any time, and then work through the lessons at your own pace and convenience.

To say I am thrilled is a understatement; in truth, Jewelry Arts Academy is the fulfillment of a dream, over five years in the making. I finally got brave enough to give it wings!

Details of my first online class, String, Crimp, Knot, Wrap: Stringing & Crimping, are below. It is the first course in what will be the String, Crimp, Knot, Wrap series, which will cover the basics and beyond of Stringing & Crimping, Knotting and Wire Wrapping.

Another dream of mine has been to create a larger studio – fulfillment center for Om Tara. Here’s a peek at the new studio space my sister helped me organize when she was here in July.

It is still “under construction”; even so, inside the well-lit space, I have been able to film how-to videos, pack kits, process orders and design new pieces. It’s also a place where I can find my center, and recommit to myself and the work I want to share in the world.

When I walk into my new studio, I feel activated and peaceful at the same time. I am so excited to see what creative ideas come to life over the next few months.

Well, here’s the scoop! In this Newsletter, you’ll find :

  • Launching my first ONLINE CLASS! Details below.
  • Saturday Healing Arts Jewelry Workshop in October
  • Upcoming Fall Shows – Jewel School & BABE
  • New Kits in the Shop!

I am wishing you comfort and connection – to self and those you love. Remember to Dream a bit each day, and make something beautiful!
Happy Beading!

Happy Beading!,

Join me for September classes at Om Tara!

Hello beautiful Creatives! I hope you have been enjoying a refreshing summer!

It’s been a bit of a whirlwind since arriving back home from my trip to TN. After a small health crisis, I decided now is the time for extreme self care. I met with a Naturopath to address the recurring headaches I’ve been having, scheduled regular bodywork sessions, and decided to listen to my body and slow down my pace.

My morning meditation and journal time has offered a remarkable opportunity to start the day more mindfully, rather than just jumping into the day-to-day, as I am often impulsed to do. I am noticing that even the small dull headaches are a sharp reminder that I’ve jumped out of my body, and into the swirl of my mind and the pressure of “all the stuff that needs doing”. I’m finding balance, asking my Divine helpers for guidance, and listening more and more each day. The listening is Key!

August is a month of Family. My younger daughter, Ruby, turned 16 on the 10th, and my older daughter, Emelin, flew out to be here for the celebration. We have all had such a wonderful time together, reading, eating at favorite restaurants, but mostly talking and connecting.

Here’s a photo of my two feisty and beautiful daughters. The top photo shows Emelin at 16 holding Ruby on the day she was born. The bottom photo shows Ruby at 16 clowning with Emelin in the movie theatre before the showing of Wonder Woman. These two are definitely their own type of Wonder Women, and I am so proud and blessed to be their Mama!

At the end of this week, my sister Lynda, will arrive for a week’s vacation. We have plans for thrifting, eating delicious food, and setting up my fulfillment center for processing orders and kit development. She is a master organizer, and one of the funniest people I know. I am so excited to spend a week with her!

Well, here’s the scoop! In this Newsletter, you’ll find:

  • Upcoming Summer Bead Classes in Santa Barbara, CA – YES, they are on Saturdays again!
  • Upcoming Bead Classes at Santa Barbara City College/CLL ~ September and November sessions
  • New Kits in the Shop!

I’m Baaack! What’s up at Om Tara this Summer

I hope this newsletter finds you well and happy, thriving and enjoying a festive and relaxing summer. It is warm here in beautiful temperate Santa Barbara, and every day, with the mountains shouldering one side of my experience and the ocean bathing the other, I feel grateful to call this marvelously beautiful place, home.

Looking back at my last blog post, it sunk in that I haven’t written since the Fall of 2016! Time has flown by! I have missed you, and though it may seem that I have been inactive, as with the seeds in winter, so much energy has been percolating and growing beneath the surface of my days and life.

This is a potent time for many, and like you, perhaps, I have been going through many deep changes. You will see the fruit of some of those changes below. If you have been holding a place of sadness or challenge, my heart is with you. These past months I have found enormous freedom and solace in the path of creative expression. For me, that is where my holiness lives; creativity is the place where I can connect to the Divine, and know that all is well. I am supported, guided and sourced, when I allow myself to listen inward and act on the wisdom offered there.

One practice that has been sustaining me and allowing me to connect with a regular source of inspiration is what I call The Flowering Tree of Life meditation. It is a grounding meditation I developed that allows Earth energy to move through the body, clearing any stuck energy and supporting the blossoming of my creative centers. I notice what happens, and journal afterwards.

This morning practice helps me find my center and source before a busy day of work and life. For those who are interested, I’m including below a link to an audio track of the meditation I practice every morning. (I’m new at this audio-recording thing, so bear with me – it’s practice for new things to come!) I hope the meditation supports your creativity and blossoming!

Well, let’s get to the nitty gritty!

In this Newsletter, you’ll find :

  • Upcoming Summer Bead Classes in Santa Barbara, CA – Psst!, these classes are all taken from my new book! And YES, they are on Saturdays again!
  • Upcoming Om Tara Show Schedule – Live on Jewel School, July 16, 18 and 20, and the Pasadena Bead and Design Show in in Pasadena, CA – July 27-30.

I am wishing you Joy and fun this Summer. Remember to Breathe, and make something beautiful!

What I did on my Winter/Spring Vacation

AKA Hibernation!

My new book is here (YAY!), ready for my trip to JTV and available in the Om Tara web shop! I am so proud of this book; the entire process was a thrilling stretch, during which I created most of the projects in the book from the ground up. This process entailed giving myself time to play and create, then turning those new designs into a narrative tutorial. Then I got to play again, creating the illustrations and learning to push the personal boundaries of my drawing skills and more importantly, my willingness to take time and dive in deep to see what wanted to come forth. I hope you experience as much joy creating the pieces in this book as I did throughout the entire process!

Earth & Elegance ~ A Bohemian’s Guide to Creating Artisan Leather Jewelry
Volume Two: Stringing & Crimping, Binding, and Assemblage

by Laura Gasparrini

Earth & Elegance ~ Volume Two contains 11 illustrated step-by-step Jewelry projects combining Leather and Stringing, as well as tips for modifying the projects and expanding your leather jewelry designs. Spiral bound, 146 pages.

Along with the new book, I am creating kits for the projects in my books and tutorials. My goal is to have a kit available for each project in every book as well as for my stand-alone tutorials. If you have a favorite class that you’ve taken from me, and would love to see a kit available for it, please let me know!

Here’s a peek at some kits up in the shop!

Here’s the link to my Flowering Tree of Life Meditation on Soundcloud: Flowering Tree of Life Meditation

The recording is just under 10 minutes. (There’s a little bit of breathiness at first, but I settle down after the first few seconds!) I usually take a few moments afterwards to journal anything I noticed, making it about a 15 minute morning practice. Each night before bed, I mentally reflect on the “flowers”, or experiences, that bloomed during the day, and offer them up to the Divine in thanks.

I find the benefits of relaxation, insight, and the power of just staying still for a few moments and noticing my inner world are bearing great fruit in my daily life.

I wish you great blessings, love, and a bountiful harvest!

Fall News at Om Tara

I hope this newsletter finds you well and happy, getting cozy in the cooler weather, and taking time for yourself to create beautiful things.

I’ve had a wonderful start to Fall, having had an unexpected and soulful reconnection to my creative roots, which seems fitting given this time of year. With leaves changing colors and the chill of morning air, I imagine roots digging a bit deeper, hunkering down for the season ahead.

boone-2My root-digging journey started at the end of September, when I traveled back east to the Piedmont area of North Carolina to visit my mom, then to Knoxville, TN for two appearances on Jewelry Television and on to Washington, DC to spend 4 wonder-filled days with my daughter, Emelin, who moved there last September.

My mom lives in the tiny town of Advance, NC, in the home my great-grandparents lived in, and we have deep roots in that town and also in the mountains of NC. The regional songs, recipes and crafts that shaped my childhood summer days were lovingly handed down from my foremothers through my grandmother to me. Those summers growing up truly shaped the woman I have become and the work I share in the world. It felt good to stand on that red North Carolina clay and remember.

On the way to Knoxville, I traveled through the Blue Ridge Mountains to Asheville, NC where, during my afternoon there, I had a truly moving experience at the Folk Art Center.

gateThe Folk Art Center is the home of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and the Allanstand Craft Shop, the oldest continually-run craft store in the nation. The story of the Guild and the visionary women behind the Southern Appalachian Handicraft Revival of the late 1800’s moved me to tears and clarified a deep knowing inside me. Standing in the presence of their stories and witnessing the gifts of their collective vision, I had a realization that, in my own way, I am walking in their footsteps; that through my work, I have the great honor to share with others the opportunity for creativity and self-reliance through craft.

My deep love of Craft, and the passion I have to share it with others as a means of joy and self-expression, is a legacy handed down by the kindred-spirited women that came before me. I am so grateful I get to share my love of this work with you!
